Long before Cancun popped up as a resort magnet, Cozumel -- some 12 miles off the mainland and about 45 miles south -- was a favored destination among diving enthusiasts. The exotic, largely unspoiled island is a Caribbean gem, with seductive beaches and inland ruins awaiting exploration, although they don’t compare with Mayan strongholds on the mainland. Tall reefs lining the southwest coast offer divers a fabulous landscape to explore, while non-divers can snorkel or indulge in other watersports. San Miguel, Cozumel’s only town, has a plaza serving as a gathering spot, especially on Sunday evenings when locals congregate. Tranquil Cozumel in recent years has become a hot cruise port of call, transforming the pier area into the main shopping district with dozens of boutiques for jewelry or bargain-priced souvenirs from genuine vanilla to Kahlua, Mexico’s popular coffee liqueur. For day-trips to mainland attractions including the ruins of Tulum or nature parks such as Xel-Ha, ferries depart regularly for the less than an hour trip to Playa del Carmen’s dock. High season for Cozumel hotels is from late December through mid April.
